The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) is evaluating the possibility that the industrial fleet can fish closer to mile 1 in the south of the country (Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna), through penetration windows.
At present, this sector carries out its fishing activities in that zone starting from mile 5, while Chile does it from mile 1, 1.5 or 2.
"We are seeing the issue with the minister because fishing moves the economy in the southern zone, such as Moquegua and Tacna, for example," said Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Javier Atkins.
The vice minister indicated that they will seek to present a technical and consensus proposal with regional governments and artisanal fishing organizations, for which they are consulting mainly with artisanal fishermen.
Atkins clarified that industrial fishing would not approach the coast in areas where artisanal fishing is concentrated. He explained that through experimental fishing by the Institute of the Sea of Peru (IMARPE), developed for about 90 to 120 days, it could be determined whether the completion of the fishing activity from mile 1 or mile 1.5 has some impact on marine resources.
