Aquacuture exports grew 13 percent in 2018

The value of Turkey's exports of aquaculture products increased by almost 13 percent in 2018, compared to the previous year, driven mainly by sales of seabass, sea bream and trout.
Last year, the Turking aquaculture sectir exported 177,659 tonnes, 13.5% more than in 2017, when the exported volume was 156,580 tonnes. In terms of value, these sales abroad generated USD 958 million, compared to USD 851 million in the previous year, the Daily Sabah reported

The Netherlands led the way in Turkey's aquaculture exports last year with sales of USD 148 million. In second place was Italy with USD 101 million and followed by Russia with USD 68 million.
Meanwhile, the country's aquaculture exports to South Korea climbed by 114 percent.

Turkish Fishery and Animal Products Sector Board Chairman Sinan Kızıltan, said they could not reach the USD 1 billion target due to the decrease in prices in the last three months of 2018.
He also noted that they are currently exporting to 87 countries, and the goal is to reach 100 countries next year, through the development of more species.
At this time, sea bass represents 95 percent of the aquaculture products that Turkey exports to the United States, and the sector is working to achieve greater sales of seabream and trout.
"We grow 20 percent every year in the U.S. market. We have a favorable position in Russia in terms of sea bream. Our exports to Russia has increased threefold in the last 10 years," Kızıltan highlighted.
