CTAQUA and CETGA are part of the 'Innoacui' project, which will be developed within the Pleamar Program with the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation
The Aquaculture Business Association of Spain (APROMAR) has launched the 'Innoacui' project with the participation of the University of Cádiz and the collaboration of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, aimed at developing and applying knowledge and innovation techniques in aquaculture farms, in order to improve animal welfare, facilitate sustainable production methods and reduce the impact on the environment.
The project is part of the Pleamar Program, co-financed by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF). Partner entities such as the Aquaculture Technology Center (CTAQUA) and the Aquaculture Cluster (CETGA) are also participants.
The program, whose full title is Incorporation of Innovation in relation to Animal Welfare in Farmed Fish in Spain, began on December 9 and will last one year. Its main objective will be to analyze the management practices of aquaculture farms in Spain, as well as the scientific knowledge and the legislation on the welfare of the most produced species in aquaculture in Spain, such as sea bream, sea bass, turbot and rainbow trout.
Subsequently, validation tests will be carried out, under controlled conditions, of the improvements in R&D&I regarding animal welfare in the CTAQUA and CETGA Technology Centers, located in El Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) and Ribeira (La Coruña), respectively. These evaluations will be related to the control of physicochemical parameters, feeding patterns, crop densities, handling and health of sea bass (CTAQUA) and turbot (CETGA). Finally, the research group in Animal Physiology of the Department of Zoology of the UCA will be responsible for analyzing the samples from the validation tests according to the indicators of stress, growth, food efficiency and presence / absence of diseases.
APROMAR, as beneficiary of the program, will be responsible for both preparing an integrated analysis (SWOT) and general coordination. Innoacui is the first of a series of projects whose results will strengthen the competitiveness of the Spanish aquaculture sector through knowledge transfer and networking. It should be noted that the development of this type of work will have an impact on an increase in the positive effects of aquaculture through R&D&I, as well as on the minimization of the environmental impact of the aquaculture activity.
