Hernán Cortes, President of CONDEPP: “We have met with the hope that the short law that is being processed in Congress will have fundamental changes since until today it is only a laundering of the current fishing law.

Taking into consideration the words of Alicia Gallardo, who pointed out: "The only way to take care of our seas is for us to act together." "As undersecretary, I will apply an open door policy." The artisanal fishers hope to be able to achieve a political commitment from the undersecretary so that the short law that is being processed in Congress is legitimate, equitable and sustainable and not a mere laundering of the current fishing law.

At the meeting this Monday, the members of the CONDEPP board, asked Ms. Gallardo in the words of its president, Hernán Cortés, that "we consider it appropriate to take the time in parliament to re-include rejected indications in the Senate Committee on Fisheries. In the first place, the division, replacing the indication of Senator Rincón that corrects the current division that gives 70% of the quotas to the industrial sector that fishing with 137 vessels while artisanal fishing has only 30% with 12,460 vessels (figures of 2018)

Second, the artisanal fishermen shared the reality that they live without having a social platform that protects them and that Undersecretary Gallardo knows well for having served as SERNAPESCA director. For Hernán Machuca, spokesman for artisanal fishermen, “we do not have social protection and there are more than one hundred thousand people who live from fishing throughout Chile. We are subject to greater risks than other workers and we have proposed that instead of giving fishing to industrialists, they pay what it is worth and thereby create a fund to ensure our needs. "

Third, the sustainability of the fishing resource in the long term, since artisanal fishing is a way of life and our worst disaster has been the decline, year after year, of the availability of the resource.

Meanwhile, the undersecretary of fisheries, Alicia Gallardo, compromised the earliest advance of the points raised. A meeting was agreed for next week where the Indespa issue will be discussed and in February the proposals regarding subdivision and social platform will be addressed.

For the CONDEPP executive committee, it was a positive meeting, given the willingness of the authority.
