Looking ahead, analysts believe prices will remain range-bound in the near term

Ecuadorian White Shrimp Prices Hold Steady as Chinese Demand Offsets Cautious European Buying

WORLDWIDE
Wednesday, January 21, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

Stable Chinese purchases and ample supply from Ecuador underpin prices, while European importers adopt a wait-and-see stance during the post-holiday market reopening.

In mid-January 2026, prices for Ecuadorian white shrimp remained broadly stable on the global market, supported by continued buying from China and a cautious return of demand from Europe after the holiday season. According to industry sources, abundant supply from Ecuador has kept prices hovering near the lows recorded at the end of 2025, reflecting a fragile but balanced supply-demand environment.

Market participants told World Food Network that the industry is currently in a post-holiday adjustment phase, with short-term price movements expected to remain limited. “Supply is sufficient, demand is recovering slowly, and the market is stable but cautious,” one trader said.

Prices Near Recent Lows

Market monitoring data show that in the third week of 2026 (January 11–17), the FOB price of 30/40 head-on, shell-on (HOSO) Ecuadorian white shrimp held steady at US$4.50–4.60 per kilogram, virtually unchanged from the previous week. This level is close to the lowest point since late 2024, highlighting the subdued pace of post-holiday demand.

An Ecuadorian exporter noted that “medium-sized shrimp demand is gradually recovering, with Chinese buyers remaining active and European markets slowly reopening, which is helping to stabilize prices.”

Europe Reopens Selectively

Despite signs of recovery, European buyers remain cautious. Many importers are prioritizing inventory assessments over placing new orders. “Buyers are back, but not rushing,” said a European trader. “Everyone is waiting for clearer consumption signals.”

This caution is reflected in a divergence in European prices by size. Current indicative prices include:

  • 30/40 HOSO: about US$4.80/kg

  • 20/30 HOSO: around US$5.80/kg

  • 40/50: approximately US$4.50/kg

  • 50/60: about US$4.30/kg

  • 60/70: roughly US$4.20/kg

  • 70/80: near US$4.00/kg

Industry insiders say this pricing structure reflects a “selective reopening” of the European market, with buyers focusing on specific sizes and applications.

China Remains a Key Pillar

Meanwhile, China continues to play a stabilizing role in the global shrimp market. Exporters report that Chinese demand remains robust, although procurement activity may slow slightly ahead of the Lunar New Year. Recent price stability in China suggests that supply and demand remain in dynamic equilibrium, rather than signaling a new upward trend.

Strong Supply from Ecuador

On the supply side, Ecuador entered 2026 with a strong harvest, particularly for medium and large sizes, adding pressure to prices. Current pond-side prices are estimated at around US$3.55/kg for 30/40 shrimp, while 21/25 headless, shell-on (HLSO) shrimp are priced at approximately US$5.30/kg. Prices for smaller sizes have remained relatively firm, indicating steady underlying demand.

Long-Term Outlook Remains Positive

Despite short-term caution, the long-term fundamentals of Ecuador’s shrimp sector remain solid. Data from the National Chamber of Aquaculture of Ecuador (CNA) show that from January to November 2025, the country exported 1.28 million tons of white shrimp, valued at US$6.8 billion—a 14% increase in volume and a 23% rise in value year on year. Full-year exports are expected to set a new record.

Looking ahead, analysts believe prices will remain range-bound in the near term. The key variables will be the pace of European restocking after the holidays and Chinese purchasing power before and after the Lunar New Year. As one European trader summed up: “Supply is ample, demand is slowly recovering, and the market is stable—but everyone is waiting for a clear signal of a real recovery.”
