Friday, January 23, 2026, 00:10 (GMT + 9)

The early appearance of the resource north of parallel 49°S, the presence of large-sized specimens, and the steady arrival of squid jiggers at Puerto Madryn and Puerto Deseado shape an intense start to the season, with direct impact on port activity and positive expectations for the sector.

The 2026 squid fishery opened under conditions that exceeded the industry's initial forecasts. Once the northern fishing grounds — between 44°S and 49°S — were authorized, the permitted jigger fleet quickly detected high concentrations of the resource . The response at sea was immediate: strong nightly catches , holds filled in short periods, and a widespread sense that the season had begun with unusual momentum.

From a spatial perspective, squid distribution followed the familiar annual pattern, with significant catches recorded between mile 50 and mile 85 , off Bahía Camarones . However, the factor that drew the greatest attention was the size composition observed during the first hauls. Large (L) sizes predominated, accompanied by small (S) sizes , with individuals showing notable mantle thickness and advanced body development , a characteristic rarely seen so early in the season. While this condition was welcomed by the fleet, it also prompted caution regarding the future biological evolution of the stock.

Ports back in motion: Madryn and Deseado resume operations

The operational turning point ashore occurred between January 18 and January 22, 2026 , when the first official landings of the season took place at Puerto Madryn (Chubut) and Puerto Deseado (Santa Cruz) . In Madryn, port operations stood out for their speed and efficiency , with vessels such as the BP Zhou Yu 9 and the BP Lu Qing Yuan Yu 288 completing unloading, resupply and departure in less than 24 hours , optimizing berth usage and reducing idle time.

In Puerto Deseado, the arrival of squid jiggers marked a critical boost after several weeks of limited activity. The first vessels to dock were the Luqing Yuan Yu 280, which landed 740 tons of squid, and the Luqing Yuan Yu 287, with a similar volume, both operating with dual discharge systems. Additional arrivals announced for the following days include Vieirasa DieciochoXin Shi Ji No. 95Xin Shi Ji No. 92Orion 3Hoyo Maru No. 37Soho Maru No. 58Luqing Yuan Yu 277, and Hai Xiang 17, reinforcing expectations of labor recovery at the Santa Cruz port.

Second trip underway and initial volume estimates

Once initial landings were completed, several jiggers returned almost immediately to the fishing grounds to begin the second trip of the year. These include Huyu 962 (PM)Lu Qing Yuan Yu 276 (PM)Sunrise 888 (PM)Lu Qing Yuan Yu 288 (PM)Zhou Yu 9 (PM), and Lu Qing Yuan Yu 280 (PD). At the same time, the Almirante Storni Pier in Puerto Madryn received the Sur Este 502 and the Lu Qing Yuan Yu 286, consolidating vessel traffic in the region.

Although official figures have yet to be finalized, preliminary industry estimates place cumulative landings at approximately 4,000 tons, reinforcing the perception of a solid and promising start to the season.

Dynamics at the edge of the EEZ

Along the 200-mile limit, squid movement is showing distinctive behavior this year. The presence of freezer vessels and trawlers, some equipped with benthic trawl nets with increased vertical opening, appears to be creating a containment effect on biomass migrating toward international waters. This situation introduces stronger interaction between fleets and explains the uneven performance observed: while jigger vessels generally record daily catches that rarely exceed 18 tons, trawlers are achieving better results along the outer edge of the EEZ.

Management and scientific monitoring

Beyond catch volumes, the season’s opening is supported by a permanent management and monitoring framework. Industry sources highlight the work of biologist Marcela Ivanovic and the cephalopod team at INIDEP, focused on maintaining escape levels consistent with long-term resource conservation. In parallel, ongoing coordination with Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Juan Antonio López Cazorla, in his role within the CFP, is viewed as key to aligning operational decisions with sustainability objectives.

With an early starthigh-quality productactive ports, and a biological scenario that demands close attention, the 2026 squid season has positioned itself from January as one of the most intense in recent years. The evolution of availability in the mile 50–85 zone and adjustments along the EEZ boundary will define the pace of the coming months.

The resumption of the harbor: Marigold

The land-based program will be visited on January 18, 2026, and on January 22, 2026 .プエルト・マドリン(チュブzhou)プエルト・デセアード(サンタ・クルス州)で, the first official formula of this season is 水阳げが実事されたのである. Marigold Port's operational efficiency is high and its operation efficiency is high. BP Zhou Yu 9 BP Lu Qing Yuan Yu 288 ships 24 hours has not cleared the cargo, supply, departure from the port has been completed, the return rate of the shore wall has increased, and the standby time has been reduced.

Vieirasa DieciochoXin Shi Ji No.95Xin Shi Ji No.92Orion 3Hoyo Maru No.37Soho Maru No.58Luqing Yuan Yu 277Hai Xiang

Spatially, the concentrated catch areas largely follow the pattern of previous years, mainly located between 50 and 85 nautical miles , off the coast of Bahía Camarones . However, what truly attracted widespread attention was the size distribution of the initial catches . The catches were predominantly large (L-sized) individuals , with some smaller (S-sized) individuals as well. Most squid exhibited thick mantles and well-developed bodies , characteristics not commonly seen at the beginning of the season. While this was welcomed, it also prompted the industry to maintain a cautious outlook on the subsequent evolution of the catch.

Ports reopen: Madeline and De Seado resume busy operations

The key period for land-based operations occurred between January 18 and 22, 2026 , with the ports of Madryn (Chubut Province) and De Seado (Santa Cruz Province) welcoming their first official unloadings of the season . At Madryn, operational efficiency was particularly outstanding, with vessels such as BP Zhou Yu 9 and BP Lu Qing Yuan Yu 288 completing unloading, resupply, and re-departure in less than 24 hours , significantly improving berth turnaround efficiency and reducing ineffective berthing time.

The arrival of squid fishing vessels in Desaiado port marks a crucial recovery in port activity after weeks of sluggishness . The first vessel to berth, Luqing Yuan Yu 280, unloaded 740 tons of squid , followed by Luqing Yuan Yu 287 , which completed a similar unloading operation, both using double-port unloading . In the coming days, vessels such as Vieirasa Dieciocho , Xin Shi Ji 95 , Xin Shi Ji 92 , Orion 3 , Hoyo Maru 37 , Soho Maru 58 , Luqing Yuan Yu 277 , and Hai Xiang 17 are expected to enter the port, bringing new hope to the local port labor market.

Second voyage commencement and initial unloading volume

After completing their first round of unloading, several squid fishing vessels returned to the fishing grounds almost immediately to begin their second voyage of the year . These included Huyu 962 (PM) , Lu Qing Yuan Yu 276 (PM) , Sunrise 888 (PM) , Lu Qing Yuan Yu 288 (PM) , Zhou Yu 9 (PM) , and Lu Qing Yuan Yu 280 (PD) . Meanwhile, the Almirante Stolny terminal in Madeline port also welcomed Sur Este 502 and Lu Qing Yuan Yu 286 , indicating a significant increase in vessel traffic in the area.

Although official statistics have not yet been finalized, industry estimates suggest that the cumulative unloading volume for this quarter has reached nearly 4,000 tons , further confirming a solid and positive start .

Dynamics at the edge of the exclusive economic zone

Near the 200-nautical-mile mark , squid movement exhibits unique characteristics this year. The presence of frozen processing vessels and trawlers , especially those using bottom trawls with larger vertical openings , may have a "blocking effect" on squid biomass migrating into international waters. This situation exacerbates the interaction between different fleets and leads to differences in operational performance: squid fishing vessels typically catch less than 18 tons per day , while trawlers have achieved relatively better results outside Argentina's exclusive economic zone .

Management and Scientific Monitoring

Behind the intensive operations, resource management and scientific monitoring systems provided support for this season's operations. The work of biologist Marcela Ivanovic and the cephalopod research team at INIDEP (National Institute for Fisheries Development) is widely recognized in the industry, with their core objective being to maintain escape rates that meet the requirements for long-term resource conservation . Meanwhile, Juan Antonio López Cazorla, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, as a key liaison for the CFP , is also promoting coordination between administrative decisions and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Thanks to an early start , high-quality catches , fully active ports , and strict resource monitoring, the 2026 squid fishing season has exhibited an unprecedented level of intensity since January. Looking ahead, resource changes in the traditional fishing grounds between 50 and 85 nautical miles and operational adjustments at the edge of the Exclusive Economic Zone will be key factors determining the season's trajectory.
