The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Orestes Ortez, announced the start of the second national marine shrimp ban, which will run from October 17 to November 15.
This second ban promotes the protection of the crustacean in the period of greatest abundance of juveniles to make it possible to continue the biological cycle and reproduce it. The first ban implemented this year ran from April 19 to May 31, and was rated as "successful" by the authorities.
During the closure period, shrimp capture is prohibited in the sea, gulf, bays and estuaries. If fishing activities are carried out during the ban season, sanctions and fines will be imposed in compliance with the General Law for the Management and Promotion of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
The fishing authorities recommend the population that if shrimp is consumed as fresh during the ban period, consumers must make sure that it comes from ponds and stores with inventories reported to CENDEPESCA.
This fishery management measure guarantees the abundance of shrimp and, in turn, protects other species that form part of the accompanying fauna of this fishery. The protection includes groups of white, red, brown shrimp and squat lobster.
Minister Ortez thanked the inter-institutional team involved in implementing this measure and the leaders of the fishermen's federations. He told them: "You are the leading force and together we believe that we can build a better performance of the national fishing activity and the catch of the different marine resources".
