13 challenges identified to increase seafood consumption in Chile

The third extended working meeting of the program "Del Mar a Mi Mesa" (From the Sea to My Table) of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA), carried out this week in Fundación Chile, had the objective of forming 13 subcommittees to advance in the creation of a roadmap that makes it possible to increase fish, shellfish, crustacean and seaweed consumption in the country.

During this year, different public and private actors have worked on the initiative that seeks to increase the intake of marine products in Chile by at least 7 kilos per capita by 2027.

Thanks to the work done in the two previous meetings "Del Mar a Mi Mesa", the main barriers were identified in terms of access, market and culture related to marine resources in the country.

In the third roundtable, the initiative focused on forming subcommittees to generate proposals for progress and implementation with the help of the participants’ knowledge and experience, one for each of the 13 objectives.

"Undoubtedly, the work that has been developed has been very intense and we have included the viewpoints and ideas of all those who have participated in the development of this strategic plan and its roadmap. There are more than 40 public and private sector players that have gathered with a common goal: to increase seafood consumption in Chile," said Pablo Berazaluce, Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

"President Michelle Bachelet’s government has been strongly committed to promoting healthy eating. In this context, seafood products have a high nutritional value and contribute to this task," added the highest authority of national fisheries and aquaculture.

Andrés Barros, Food & Aquaculture Manager at Fundación Chile, said: "We are very pleased to have accompanied this process, which has succeeded in building a consensual vision among so many actors based on a high impact project for the country. The resulting roadmap will enable the prioritized activities to be implemented in an orderly, progressive and coordinated way to achieve a global average of ten years for seafood consumption in Chile."
