The Galician fleet operating in the Falkland Islands fishing ground is returning to the port of Vigo after the closing of the best season registered since 1995 in those waters.
According to the Falkland Islands Government, the 16 vessels participating in the fishery captured a total of 78,913.8 tonnes of the cephalopod this year, almost 25 per cent more than in 2017.
The second stage, which is usually key to defining the results of the year, ended with higher catches than on other occasions. During this year's harvest, 35,828 tonnes were caught in the second stage and 43,085 tonnes in the first one, reported Faro de Vigo.
Falkland Islands Goverment Fisheries Department director John Barton highlighted that this year's catches "have been the highest since 1995", when 98,400 tonnes were obtained.
"However, the comparison is not entirely similar," Barton told Faro de Vigo. In 1995 the season was longer and more boats operated, which implies that the fishing effort was greater than in 2018.
Sources of the sector point out that despite the abundance of Loligo squid this year, prices remain stable, and they trust that they will not go down now.
Last year, 34 per cent of all the squid that Spain imported came from the Falkland Islands.
