Over 2,200 artisanal vessels registered for the formalization process

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) reported that to date more than 2,220 artisanal boats have been registered for the artisanal fishing formalization process promoted by the sector.
"This process, under the Legislative Decree 1392, is aimed at shipowners, or owners of an artisanal fishing vessel that does not have a fishing permit," explained Minister Raúl Pérez-Reyes.
PRODUCE head pointed out that the owners of artisanal vessels that participate in this process will be able to improve the sanitary and preservation conditions of the fishery products they capture.
"They will also increase their bargaining power when they make the sale of hydrobiological products and have the opportunity to access bank financing to invest in their work tools," he said.
According to the information provided by the Ministry, 2,267 artisanal vessels of more than 6.48 m3 of gross tonnage and up to 32.6 m3 of storage capacity have been registered for the formalization process.
The regions with the largest number of vessels registered in the list for the Artisanal Fishing Formalization are: Piura (1252), Lima and Callao (294), Tumbes (154), Lambayeque (163), Ancash (109), La Libertad (86) , Ica (83), Arequipa (59), Moquegua (50), and Tacna (17).
The enrolment in the list of boats will close next Wednesday, October 24.
Pérez-Reyes stressed that formalization campaigns are being carried out through six brigades, which move along the coast, in order to provide technical assistance to those administered in the use of the Artisanal Fishing Formalization System (SIFORMA) and be able to formalize about 3,500 boats.
He explained that the formalization process has a term of validity of two years, within which the owner of an artisanal fishing vessel greater than 6.48 gross tonnage up to 32.6 m3 will obtain his certificate of registration, technical protocol for fishing permit and the corresponding artisanal fishing permit.
The minister also explained that this process has five steps: registration in the list of vessels for the artisanal fishing formalization, verification of the existence of vessels that do not have a registration certificate, granting the registration certificate, granting the technical protocol for fishing permits and granting the fishing permit.
Similarly, PRODUCE head said that it has been authorized in an exceptional way a new term for formalization of artisanal fishing vessels to ships less than 6.48 gross tonnage, under the scope of Legislative Decree No. 1273. These registrations will be valid until next November 3.
