UNCTAD member countries granted observer status to four non-governmental organizations on 2 October during the 68th executive session

IPNLF awarded UNCTAD observer status

Joining the intergovernmental body will give a stronger voice to the world’s one-by-one tuna fisheries

The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF), the non-profit association that is committed to developing and supporting responsible one-by-one tuna fisheries and supply chains, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded observer status with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

IPNLF’s application for UNCTAD observer status was approved on 2 October 2019. Moving forward, it will be ideally positioned to establish a closer working relationship and a firm basis for cooperation with the intergovernmental body.

Having UNCTAD observer status means that IPNLF will be able to have representation and participate in Trade and Development Board meetings and in public intergovernmental meetings organised by UNCTAD. Moreover, having a presence at this international forum strengthens IPNLF’s voice in advocating for more equitable and sustainable international fisheries policies that protect ocean resources and the communities that rely upon them.

Martin Purves, Managing Director of IPNLF, says, “Joining UNCTAD presents an excellent new opportunity for the realisation of our mutual goals. Through our research, projects and partnerships, we are working to ensure small-scale, one-by-one tuna fisheries are represented and actively engaged in the decision-making for the international management of tuna resources.”

IPNLF also holds official observer status at several regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs) relevant to its mission and its Members.
