Shrimp laboratories recorded losses amounting to USD 1 million as a result of the 12-day national paralysation that affected Ecuador, according to the president of the National Chamber of Aquaculture (CNA), José Antonio Camposano.
Camposano provided this information in the framework of the inauguration of the twenty-third edition of the Aqua Expo World Aquaculture Congress 2019, on Monday night October 21 in Guayaquil.
He explained that this sector cannot stop moving its product to fattening farms because the larva reaches a size that does not become suitable to be stocked and have the expected yields. "This was the most affected step."
On the side of packaging and farm products companies, he clarified that no major losses were recorded because the unblocking of certain road axes that allowed the transport of the crustacean could be achieved. "The time windows on the Machala-Guayaquil highway made the shrimp reach its destination, albeit late," he said.
Camposano stressed that such acts cannot happen again, because they put at risk exports and local production.
During the event, a letter from President Lenín Moreno was read.

In the document, the President recalled that the shrimp industry is the main non-oil export sector with a growth of 19% in 2019. Therefore, he points out that a few weeks ago the tariff rate of 72 subheadings of the agricultural sector and fishery were lowered, and he revealed that the suppression of VAT to 185 subheadings for aquaculture use is under analysis. For Camposano, the announcement regarding tariffs and elimination of taxes is a decision in the "right direction".
The Aqua Expo 2019 showcase opens from October 22 to 24 at the Guayaquil Convention Center. This year the trade fair has an area of 6,500 m2 and more than 250 stands of companies related to shrimp.
