Thursday, October 10, 2024, 07:00 (GMT + 9)

In September 2024, South Korea imported 14,614 tons of Chinese seafood, marking an 11% increase from 13,160 tons in the same month last year. The cumulative import volume for the year reached 149,925 tons, a 3% rise from 145,791 tons in 2023, accounting for 23% of the total seafood imports of 651,137 tons.

Among the key items, imports of frozen monkfish rose by 12% to 21,594 tons, up from 19,216 tons the previous year. Conversely, frozen squid imports declined by 12%, totaling 12,337 tons compared to 14,079 tons in 2023.

Live baby clams saw a significant 16% increase, with imports reaching 11,774 tons, while live hard clams rose by 6% to 11,235 tons. In contrast, frozen poulp squid imports decreased by 8%, totaling 10,583 tons, down from 11,544 tons last year.

The total import value of Chinese seafood in September 2024 was USD 65.88 million, a 9% increase from USD 60.57 million in 2023. However, the cumulative import value for the year stood at USD 605.13 million, reflecting a 1% decrease from USD 596.66 million in the previous year. The average import price was USD 4.04 per kilogram, a slight decline of 1% compared to USD 4.09 per kilogram during the same period last year.

While overall imports of Chinese seafood have risen, fluctuations in specific items and import values, along with average prices, warrant careful monitoring.
