Salmon mortality increase detected in Australis Mar centre

The Regional Directorate of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (SERNAPESCA) Magallanes activated the contingency plan for mass mortalities due to an increase in salmon mortality in a farming centre located in the Canal Valdés area, in the province of Última Esperanza.

        

The event, registered in the Morgan farming centre, belongs to the company Australis Mar SA, has been attributed to a drop in oxygen in the sector.

The farming centre is in the harvesting process with approximately 1.1 million units of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), with an average weight of 5.6 kg each.

On November 15, the centre exceeded 15 tonnes of accumulated mortality in seven consecutive days, and notified SERNAPESCA within 24 hours, activating the approved contingency plan immediately, as established by current regulations.

As of Monday, November 19, there had been an accumulated contingent mortality of 76 tonnes of salt (13,600 units).

During the weekend, officials from SERNAPESCA in Magallanes travelled to the farming centre with the purpose of monitoring the health and environmental situation. There they verified the implementation of the contingency plan, withdrawal of cage mortality, management and disposal of the cage according to the protocols established for the case, with one part being silage in the same centre (5.8 tonnes) and the other sent to the reducing plant of Los Lagos Region.

According to what was verified by SERNAPESCA in the field, this mortality was due to a punctual event of low oxygen in the centre, so the case monitoring will be maintained. It is expected that mortality will decrease gradually.
