Second anchovy season begins with ‘historic minimum incidence of juveniles’

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) stressed that the results of exploratory fishing and the first days of the start of the second anchovy fishing season in the north-center of the country have been showing a historic minimum incidence of juvenile specimen capture.

The ministry informed that from November 6 to 18, the average size of the anchovies caught was 14 centimeters, a quite positive figure that shows the proper management that PRODUCE has been giving the resource for several years. Likewise, the Institute of the Sea of ​​Peru (IMARPE) reported that a speciment of 17.5 cm was captured.

It should be remembered that the minimum catch size of the anchovy is 12 centimeters.

According to IMARPE reports, in Piura and La Libertad the percentage of juvenile capture was 0%. Meanwhile, in Ancash (Chimbote) it did not exceed 0.02% and in the Lima region the maximum was recorded in Chancay, with only 1.64%.

"This information allows us to gather that the second anchovy fishing season will be successful and will ensure a sustainable fishery for the benefit of the sector and the country," concluded.
