Scallops (Argopecten purpuratus) and Peruvian silverside (Odontesthes regia) will re-enter the Chinese market. The announcement was made after the signing of a commercial agreement between the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) and the Department of Political Affairs of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC).

The “Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the import and export of safe aquatic products”, signed by the head of PRODUCE, Rocío Barrios and  deputy minister and head of the Department of Political Affairs of the GACC,-Hu Wei.

"Within the framework of the incorporation of these fishery resources in the list of exportable products to China, we are supporting actions to reactivate the international trade of traditional resources of Peru, such as, scallops and our silverside," said the Peruvian minister after signing the agreement.

In this way, the reinstatement of both resources in the official export list becomes effective after a delegation, headed by Deputy Minister Maria del Carmen Abregú, traveled to China for the respective talks, taking advantage of the good relations between both countries.

Rocío Barrios also emphasized that this market opportunity will allow Peruvian exports to be reactivated and the opening of an important niche. It also reveals the biophysical condition of fishery resources that have not had an uptick in exports more than six years ago, due to many negotiations that did not come to fruition until today.

The Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture also participated in the signing of the document, which highlighted as a great achievement, for the benefit of the fisheries industry and artisanal fishermen, the return of the scallops and the silverside to the Chinese market.

In turn, Vice Minister Hu Wei said that because both species already had international registration access, the process for their reincorporation was less cumbersome.

“Based on the confidence we have in them, I am glad to announce the return of the silverside and the scallps to the official list of China. The decision would be published tomorrow (December 7) on the official website,” he said.

During the bilateral meeting, the head of the sector, Rocío Barrios, reaffirmed PRODUCE's commitment to ensure respect for and compliance with sanitary regulations, so that the health and safety of hydrobiological products that are consumed in the national market and those that are exported to various countries can be guaranteed.

At the end of the meeting, procedures were exchanged to optimize the shrimp protocol.

It is worth noting that in 2018 China was the main market for products for indirect human consumption with an 80% participation, while for the direct human consumption market it represented 11.7% participation, being the third consumer country of these products.
