In Peru, about 24 vessels have authorization to fish eel in the Peruvian sea and that is a good fleet average to avoid the depredation of the species. In 2008 and 2009 there were many illegal vessels (they added up to 71) that overfished and began to reduce sizes. In order to achieve its sustainability, the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe) sets fishing quotas every year.
The major exported countries of frozen conger eel fillets are Peru, China, and Ecuador.
By the end of November, about 1,046 tons were imported from Peru, followed by 435 tons from China and 239 tons from Ecuador.
