Veramaris partners with new online seafood retailer KnowSeafood to introduce salmon raised on home-grown natural algae oil

Blair, Nebraska – For the first time ever, consumers across all 50 US states can now order salmon enriched with Veramaris’ algae Omega-3 oil, from the new online seafood outlet KnowSeafood.

KnowSeafood delivers sustainable, natural and trusted fully traceable seafood to homes in all 50 US states and has selected sushi grade Auroraâ salmon as its only Atlantic salmon brand. It is produced by Lerøy and raised on Veramaris algae oil in the Arctic Norwegian fjords, under the spectacle of the Northern Lights, the Aurora Borealis.

Veramaris produces its natural marine algae oil at a state-of-the-art facility in Blair, Nebraska. This breakthrough innovation provides twice the level of EPA & DHA Omega-3 compared to fish oil, allowing to both raise the nutrition profile of the fish and reducing fish ingredients in the salmon feed. Fish raised on Veramaris’ algae oil have higher levels of EPA & DHA, the two essential fatty acids for heart, brain, eye and skin health.

What’s more, Veramaris’ algal oil is entirely sustainable, a key factor in KnowSeafood’s decision to partner with Veramaris and contributes to preserving the oceans by keeping forage fish, such as anchovies, in their natural habitat rather than using them in fish oil or fishmeal.

Karim Kurmaly is CEO of Veramaris, he said: “The launch of KnowSeafood and their choice to offer salmon raised on Veramaris’ algae oil is a significant breakthrough in the online seafood market. Significant because for the first time ever a consumer anywhere in the US can purchase sustainable salmon, rich in EPA & DHA Omega-3, online and have it delivered direct from farm to door.

“In the two years since Veramaris was established we have successfully adopted our value chain approach to bring sustainable salmon and trout to progressive bricks and mortar retailers around the world. The partnership with online retailer KnowSeafood is a further testament to the unrivalled nutrition, environment and health credentials of Veramaris’ algae oil and we look forward to a long and fruitful collaboration.

Daniel McQuade, the co-founder and CEO of KnowSeafood, said “At KnowSeafood, we are providing our customers with the highest standards of quality and traceability. Traceability is the backbone of sustainability, allowing us to transparently inform customers of the provenance of their seafood, and with Aurora and Veramaris, we are bringing American consumers salmon with superb EPA & DHA nutritional values and flavour profiles.”

Scott Drake, President of Lerøy Seafood USA said “We are humbled that KnowSeafood selected Aurora, our sushi-grade salmon raised under the Aurora Borealis in the arctic fjords of Norway on a diet of natural marine algae oils, including the Veramaris algae grown here in the U.S.A. These oils are the richest source of EPA & DHA Omega-3—the two key types of healthy Omega-3 that are only found in fish and seafood. Using algal oil promotes marine biodiversity and makes salmon more sustainable by reducing the wild-caught fish used as salmon feed.”

KnowSeafood officially launched in the US on December 1, 2020.
