Deep-Sea Vessel Guoxin 1 2-1 Pioneers Smart, Nomadic Farming to Optimize Fish Production and Boost Blue Economy

The People's Republic of China has significantly advanced its deep-sea farming capabilities with the addition of the Guoxin 1 2-1, a 150,000-tonne deep-sea smart aquaculture vessel, to its growing "mobile aquaculture" fleet. The ship, which operates as a roaming fish farm, leverages mobility to secure optimal conditions for fish growth, marking a major technological leap in the marine aquaculture industry.

Nomadic Farming for Optimal Conditions

The vessel employs a sophisticated roaming tank system, allowing it to relocate to areas with ideal water temperature, currents, and quality. "We go wherever the water is best," stated Sun Linlin, production director in charge of the vessel, likening the operation to nomadic herders seeking the best pastures. This strategic mobility ensures the fish are consistently kept in the most suitable natural environment.

  • The Guoxin 1 2-1 is currently operating in the waters off Zhoushaneast China's Zhejiang Province.

  • It is recognized as the world's first vessel of its size specifically designed for smart aquaculture, surpassing its predecessor, the 100,000-tonne Guoxin 1.

  • The vessel was launched in April and began trial operations immediately. By Nov. 20, following the introduction of over 1 million juvenile large yellow croakers in early May, it recorded a single harvest of over 46,000 adult fish.

Automation and Smart Systems

The deep-sea mobile farm is defined by its high level of automation and centralized, smart control systems. Despite its total water volume of 96,000 cubic meters, the vessel requires a minimal crew of just 35 members, with only 16 being technical staff and workers directly responsible for aquaculture operations—a testament to its efficiency.

  • A smart aquaculture network, comprising over 200 cameras and 2,000 sensors, monitors the entire production cycle in real-time, tracking factors like current speed, oxygen levels, temperature, and feed volume.

  • The ship features 15 standard rearing tanks for commercial farming, four circular exercise tanks to maintain fish health, and 22 experimental tanks for research.

  • Advanced environmental control systems in the enclosed tanks ensure continuous water circulation and natural purification, promoting healthy fish.

  • Key operations, from stocking juvenile fish to feeding and harvesting, are performed by machines. The vessel has achieved a mechanization rate exceeding 90 percent, and automation levels are 45 percent higher than its predecessor.

  • The intelligent system can even make up to 30 percent of farming decisions, resulting in a 20-percent reduction in labor costs.

  • An automated feeding system handles the daily requirement of 1 to 1.5 tonnes of feed per tank. Just two workers can manage the feeding for the entire vessel using automatic loading and rail-guided trolleys.

Driving an Industrial Upgrade

The Guoxin 1 2-1 incorporates over 160 technological breakthroughs and optimization innovations, spanning layout, farming systems, renewable energy use, and information integration. The project aims to revolutionize the entire marine aquaculture industrial chain.

  • Special feed formulas and intelligent software are enhancing product quality.

  • Efficient logistics systems are capable of delivering fresh fish to markets within six hours for distances up to 500 kilometers and within 15 hours for distances up to 1,000 kilometers.

  • The downstream processing sector is creating a range of products, from fresh catches to pre-cooked meals, to meet surging consumer demand.

The fleet already comprises three ships of similar characteristics, although the latest has received some improvements based on the experience of the first ones.Photo: 智旅深蓝/YouTube

The success of the vessel is part of a larger strategy. Its sister ship, Guoxin 1 2-2, which is dedicated to high-value cold-water species like salmon and trout, has already been launched. When all three ships in the Guoxin 1 series reach full capacity, their combined annual production is projected to exceed 10,000 tonnes.

Sun Linlin emphasized the strategic implications: "These ships free aquaculture from the uncertainties of the sea, enabling seasonal and geographic flexibility. We can now raise southern fish species in northern waters and northern species in southern waters." This industrialized offshore farming model transforms the deep sea into what Sun calls a "sustainable blue granary."
