In the framework of the SPRFMO seventh meeting held on January 22 in The Hague, the Netherlands, an Ecuadorian delegation presented the scientific, technical and economic arguments to support the request and achieve a reasonable increase, so that at least one Ecuadorian vessel can participate in the jack mackerel fishery, generate employment sources and diversify the supply of fishery products.
The delegation consisted of representatives of the Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries, headed by the Vice Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Guido Ferretti and the Ambassador of Ecuador in the Netherlands, Fernando Buchelli.
For its part, Peru agreed to hold a new bilateral meeting in Lima in the coming days, in order to review several common fisheries topics such as: tropical tuna fisheries, jack mackerel, giant squid, dolphinfish, hake and swordfish.
The SPRFMO is an international entity committed to the long-term conservation and sustainable use of fisheries resources in the high seas of the South Pacific Ocean, and to the protection of the marine ecosystems that harbor the resources. Likewise, it grants fishing quotas to each member country, for certain species, among them the jack mackerel.
