The Court of Appeals of Concepción has rejected a presentation by the National Fisheries Service (SERNAPESCA) and decided to maintain the prohibition for an external company to certify sardine and anchovy landings performed by artisanal fishermen from Coronel.

The Court’s resolution, which benefits nine artisanal vessels, has stopped the certification of these small pelagic fish, within the framework of a second protection appeal against SERNAPESCA, and denounces the process in charge of the private company Intertek as illegal and arbitrary.
SERNAPESCA lawyers will try to revoke this new order of not innovating, arguing that it puts the sustainability of fisheries resources at risk.
Nearly two weeks ago, four shipowners managed to get the Court to prohibit the certification of fish for vessels being less than 12 metres, a procedure that the state agency handed over to an external company.

Now, after repeating the protection appeal and the arguments put forth by the former, seven other owners of nine artisanal vessels obtained a similar order not to innovate.
Although it is a temporary measure that could be reversed in the final decision of the court of appeals, SERNAPESCA announced that they will apply special measures to prove that the fishing products that shipowners deliver to processing plants is legal, informed Biobiochile.cl.
