The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (PROFECO) calls on the tuna sector to inform consumers about the amount of soy added to their products.

Canned tuna.

PROFECO explains that with the proposed amendment to NOM-084-SCFI-1994, what is intended for the consumer to be informed of the soy content in a tuna presentation, and for the name of the product to be specified as "Tuna with soy" or "Soy with tuna", in cases that merit it.

This request for modification is derived from the results obtained in the quality study carried out by the National Consumer Protection Laboratory on 57 canned tuna presentations, in which soy was found in 18 of them, without the consumer being informed of the exact amount of soy that the product has.

Tuna products with soy

The proposal was presented through the National Standardization Commission of the Ministry of Economy, and work will be done on it during this year.

In order to be called tuna, with the modification to the NOM, soy content will no longer be allowed not to have limits, and in some cases, as specified in the study, that the soy goes from being a texturizer and/or binder to be a substitute for the same tuna.

Why is there soy in tuna products? Tuny explains it.

PROFECO emphasizes that the study carried out on tuna presentations and its release in Revista del Consumidor aims to guide food buyers about the quality of the different presentations available in the market so that with this information they can make better purchasing decisions, and in no way was it done to harm the national producers’ image in any way.
