Pollock catches begin to improve reports Federal Fisheries Agency

Russian fishermen are increasing their pollock catches and closing the gap year-on-year thanks to improved weather conditions and the availability of storage facilities. This is stated in the message of the Federal Agency for Fishery.

“Pollock season is gaining momentum, the lag from the last year's catch level is decreasing. This is facilitated by improved weather conditions in the fishing grounds and the availability of refrigeration facilities for storing catches. Free transport capacity of vessels serving the expedition is currently about 73 thousand tons, six more transport vessels with a total volume of 32 thousand tons are on the way,” the message says.

According to the ministry, the pollock catch on February 28 in the Far Eastern Basin amounted to a total of 408.5 thousand tons, which is 121.1 thousand tons less than last year (-22.9%). For comparison, as of February 14, 2021, the level of pollock production was 28.6% lower than the level of the corresponding period last year. In addition, 78.8 thousand tons of Pacific herring were harvested (+ 40.7%). Cod catch amounted to 31.9 thousand tons (-12.6%).

The Federal Agency for Fishery added that as of February 28, 88 vessels were fishing for pollock in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, one vessel was fishing for herring, and 15 vessels were fishing for cod.

As previously reported, Russian fishing vessels encountered certain difficulties in unloading products in the main ports of China, Dalian and Qingdao. On February 25, the head of the Federal Agency for Fishery, Ilya Shestakov, assured that the capacity for storing fish in Russia is sufficient; there are no plans to suspend fishing due to problems with the shipment of products in the ports of China. According to him, 80% of the catch storage capacity is free, which is about 120 thousand tons.
