At Mowi, salmon health and welfare are paramount. The company is dedicated to advancing sustainable aquaculture practices and delivering high-quality products to consumers globally.

A key innovation driving Mowi's success is post-smolt processing. This involves rearing larger, more robust salmon before transferring them to open sea pens. This strategy contributed significantly to Mowi's record-high harvest of 502,000 tonnes of salmon in 2024.

Understanding Post-Smolt Processing:

Traditional aquaculture transfers young salmon (smolts) to sea farms prematurely, leading to increased mortality, disease susceptibility, and stress, hindering sustainability. Mowi's approach extends the freshwater phase in specialized post-smolt facilities. This enhances fish health, reduces sea exposure by up to six months, and improves biological KPIs.

The Benefits of Extended Freshwater Rearing:

Prolonged freshwater rearing yields healthier, more resilient salmon, improving product quality and their ability to withstand open sea conditions. It also reduces the company's environmental impact, contributing to long-term sustainability.

Furthermore, post-smolt production is a sound business decision, driving harvest volume increases, optimizing license turnover, and reducing operational costs.

Implementation Across Global Operations:

Mowi invests continuously in post-smolt facilities worldwide.

Its Nordheim hatchery in Norway exemplifies this commitment, utilizing advanced technology for land-based smolt rearing in controlled environments before sea transfer.

In Scotland, salmon are transferred from indoor freshwater tanks to net pens in freshwater lochs, closer to shore, for continued growth before sea deployment. This provides enhanced protection for smaller salmon.

While regional processes vary, the benefits of post-smolt rearing remain consistent across Mowi's global operations, ensuring optimal salmon health worldwide.

Toward Sustainable Aquaculture:

Post-smolt farming is integral to building a sustainable aquaculture industry. By minimizing sea exposure, Mowi reduces its environmental footprint and delivers high-quality salmon products.

The company remains committed to innovation and responsible aquaculture, prioritizing post-smolt strategies to maximize benefits and drive continuous improvement.
