ASC Launches Global Consultation on Responsible Aquaculture in Protected Areas

30-day stakeholder process aims to align aquaculture development with biodiversity conservation and global environmental frameworks
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has launched a 30-day stakeholder consultation to explore how aquaculture can operate responsibly within and around Protected Areas, a move aimed at strengthening environmental protection while supporting sustainable food production.
The consultation runs from 9 March to 9 April and invites participation from producers, environmental organisations, academics, retailers, and industry stakeholders worldwide. It forms part of ASC’s broader initiative to address environmental risks affecting biodiversity, habitats, and ecosystem processes in protected regions.
 According to ASC Environmental Standards Coordinator Dan Auwkit, the initiative comes at a critical moment for both food security and conservation.
“As aquaculture becomes central to feeding a growing global population and protected areas continue to expand, there is a clear opportunity to better align food production with conservation goals,” said Dan Auwkit. “By bringing greater clarity to how aquaculture can operate responsibly within or near protected areas, we can support biodiversity protection while enabling responsible aquaculture for the future.”
Throughout the consultation period, ASC will engage a wide range of stakeholders—including producers, NGOs, academia, civil society organisations, retailers, brands, suppliers, industry representatives, and certification bodies—to ensure the final framework is scientifically robust, practical, and aligned with global conservation objectives.
A risk-based approach to aquaculture management
A central component of the project will be a detailed review of existing ASC certification requirements and interpretation guidance. These will be compared with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) protected area categories as well as relevant national legislation to identify any gaps or inconsistencies.
One of the key outcomes will be the creation of a risk-based compatibility assessment designed to determine where aquaculture activities can coexist with the conservation objectives of a protected area.

Rather than relying on rigid thresholds, the assessment will use broad, practical criteria to help aquaculture farms understand whether their operations align with protected area objectives. The system will also give auditors a consistent framework for evaluating compliance across different environmental and regulatory contexts.
Deliverables expected by 2028
The project is scheduled to run through 2028, when several major outputs are expected. These include:

 To ensure practicality, the framework will be tested in selected geographic regions, allowing ASC and partners to evaluate whether it can be effectively applied across different regulatory systems and ecological environments.
Supporting biodiversity and communities
The consultation aims to clarify how aquaculture can responsibly operate within protected areas while aligning ASC certification requirements with globally recognised conservation frameworks, including the IUCN Protected Area Categories and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
At the heart of the initiative is the development of an evidence-based, audit-ready framework created with input from technical experts and stakeholders.
The framework is expected to reduce uncertainty for aquaculture operators, improve audit consistency, and strengthen ASC’s credibility with governments, conservation organisations, and market partners.
In addition, the project will integrate socio-economic considerations, ensuring the approach reflects the needs of local communities and responsible economic development.
The initiative will also align ASC’s work with established international conservation and impact assessment systems, including Natura 2000, the Ramsar Convention, and the World Heritage Convention impact assessment protocols.
