Strong winter catches boost Norwegian herring exports, while lower landings and reduced shipments weigh on the mackerel market.

The export market for Norwegian herring and mackerel showed contrasting trends in February, with a strong performance for herring driven by robust fishing and rising demand, while mackerel exports declined sharply due to lower landings and shifting market conditions.

Solid Month for Norwegian Herring

Norway exported 44,475 tonnes of herring worth NOK 703 million (about US$73.3 million) in February.

The value increased by NOK 203 million (about US$21.2 million), or 40 percent, compared with the same month last year. Export volumes also rose significantly, increasing 67 percent year-on-year.

The largest markets for Norwegian herring during the month were Egypt, Denmark, and Lithuania.

The winter fishing season for herring has now ended, and catches were described as very strong. During January and February, a total of 170,000 tonnes of herring were landed in Norway—an increase of 64 percent compared with the same period last year.

“We have to go back to 2012 to find similar figures, and this is also reflected in the export statistics," says Jan Eirik Johnsen, Head of Pelagic Species at the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Egypt Leads Demand for Whole Frozen Herring

Exports of whole frozen herring showed particularly strong growth, with Egypt emerging as the dominant market in February.

“In Egypt, herring is one of the most important seafood products and is mainly consumed smoked. It's called Ringa and is particularly associated with the national spring celebration Sham El-Nassim, which this year falls on 13 April," says Johnsen.

For herring fillets, the top markets were Poland and Lithuania.

"The feedback from exporters is that the quality and size of the herring has been perfect for fillet production. The markets are described as good, but it is difficult to achieve good margins, partly because the Norwegian krone has strengthened against the euro," explains Jan Eirik Johnsen.

Sharp Drop in Mackerel Export Volumes

In contrast, Norwegian mackerel exports declined significantly in February.

Norway exported 8,311 tonnes of mackerel worth NOK 423 million (about US$44.1 million) during the month.

Compared with the same period last year, the export value fell by NOK 189 million (about US$19.7 million), representing a decline of 31 percent, while export volumes dropped 56 percent.

The largest markets for mackerel in February were South Korea, Lithuania, and Vietnam.

The mackerel fishing season, which started in August last year, concluded in February. According to figures from Norges Sildesalgslag, total landings for the 2025/2026 season reached 185,000 tonnes, marking a 44 percent decrease compared with the 2024/2025 season.

"After setting price records every month from the start of the season in August, we see that the price of whole frozen mackerel fell from January to February," says Jan Eirik Johnsen, Head of Pelagic Species at the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Fillet Exports Start the Year Lower

In 2025, Norway set a record for mackerel fillet exports, shipping 12,500 tonnes worth NOK 800 million (around US$83.5 million).

However, exports of fillets have started 2026 well below last year's levels.

“So far this year, however, fillet exports have started significantly below last year. In January and February, 750 tonnes of fillet were exported, compared with almost 2,400 tonnes in the same period last year," explains Johnsen.

Despite lower volumes, prices have increased sharply. The current price stands at NOK 95 per kg (about US$9.90/kg), compared with NOK 57 per kg (about US$5.90/kg) during the same period last year.

"It is very positive that exports of mackerel fillets picked up last year, following many years of investment in fillet production in Norway. There was good demand for fillets produced from fresh raw materials during the season. However, fillets based on frozen raw material and purchased late in the season at significantly higher prices met with resistance in the markets," says Jan Eirik Johnsen.

前年同月比では輸出額がNOK 189 million(約US$19.7 million)減となり、31%減となった。

現在の価格は**NOK 95 per kg(約US$9.90/kg)で、前年同期のNOK 57 per kg(約US$5.90/kg)**と比べて大幅に高い。

2月,挪威出口了44,475吨鲱鱼,价值NOK 703 million(约US$73.3 million)

与去年同期相比,出口额增加了NOK 203 million(约US$21.2 million),增长40%。

当月挪威出口8,311吨鲭鱼,价值NOK 423 million(约US$44.1 million)

与去年同期相比,出口额减少NOK 189 million(约US$19.7 million),下降31%,而出口量下降56%

目前价格为NOK 95 per kg(约US$9.90/kg),而去年同期为NOK 57 per kg(约US$5.90/kg)
