Bermeo Tuna receives the MSC Award for promoting sustainable fishing

GIJÓN. The association Bermeo Tuna World Capital (Bermeo Tuna) has been distinguished with the MSC Award for the Promotion of Sustainable Fishing, a recognition granted by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to organizations that stand out for promoting responsible practices in the fishing sector and advancing the sustainability of marine resources.
The award highlights the work of Bermeo Tuna as a platform that integrates the entire tuna value chain — from the fishing fleet and the processing industry to the scientific field and public institutions — with the objective of promoting a development model based on the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the sector.

“This award is, above all, a recognition of the companies and organizations that make up Bermeo Tuna and that have decided to lead from the tuna sector a way of working based on sustainability, collaboration and a vision for the future,” said Maitane Leizaola, director of the association.
International projection and defense of responsible fishing
Over the past year, Bermeo Tuna has intensified its international activity, strengthening its work in outreach and cooperation around responsible fishing. Among the most relevant milestones is the presentation of the International Declaration for Tuna Sustainability at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum, held in New York.
At this international meeting, representatives of the sector defended the role of sustainable fishing in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda, emphasizing the importance of responsible management of marine resources.

Through research projects, international outreach actions, and knowledge promotion programs, the association works to position Bermeo and the Basque tuna sector as global references in sustainable fishing and the blue economy.
The recognition from the MSC also highlights the joint commitment of companies, institutions and scientific entities that are part of the organization to move toward a model of responsible fishing that guarantees the conservation of marine ecosystems, the well-being of fishing communities, and the future viability of the sector.
