The fisheries and oceanography research vessel Miguel Oliver, of the General Secretariat of Fisheries, sailed from the port of Malaga to start the MEDITS series of fishery assessment in the western Mediterranean. The three consecutive surveys that make up this series begin this way, ending in the Port of Palma de Mallorca on June 24.
The first part of this survey will encompass the so-called GSA 1 and 2 of the Mediterranean (Alboran) and will end on May 14 in Cartagena. That same day will begin the study of the GSA 6 (the most extensive one), which will last until June 9 with the entry into the Port of Barcelona, where the ship will leave for Mallorca to address the study of GSA 5 (Balearic Islands).
The main objective of this series of surveys is the evaluation of the demersal resources along the continental shelf and slope of the Mediterranean coast to estimate the abundance and distribution of the main stocks of fishing interest.
The work carried out will characterize the communities and habitats of the area, including the collection of sediments and the taking of oceanographic data from water bodies, in addition to completing the census of seabirds, and studies of trophic relationships among different species.
This series of surveys has been systematically developed over the last few years and constitutes an important historical series as a basis for assessing the different stocks. Currently, these surveys are integrated into the National Basic Data Program for the sustainable management of the resources of our seas, based on obtaining the best possible scientific data.
The General Secretariat of Fisheries has the collaboration of the Spanish Oceanographic Institute (IEO), in charge of scientific management in Medits 2018.
