Japanese imports of frozen bigeye tuna fall in the first two months of 2019

The average price of Japanese imports of frozen bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) was JPY 779 in February, down 2% on that of the previous month and 11% on that of February 2018.
During the first two months, the average was JPY 1,788/kg, down 18% on that of the same period last year.

During the month analysed, imports of frozen bigeye reached 3,717 tonnes, worth JPY 2,897 million, down 2% in volume and 4% in value on those registered in the previous month and down 24% in volume and 32% in value on those of February 20187.

During the period, imports totalled 7,527 tonnes and JPY 5,929 million, down 5% in volume and 13% in value on those of the same period last year.
The 57% of imports were from Taiwan (4,345 tonnes) while those from China amounted to 17% (1,261 tonnes).
