Blue whiting fishing and reception facilities are operating normally, even during these corona virus times
This week's blue whiting fishing has gone awry even though there has been some "slimmer" fishing on the St. Kilda field than expected.
A total of more than 48,600 tonnes have been reported, of which 38,600 tonnes have been fished in the area from the edge of Porcupine Bank and northwards, 9,700 tonnes have been fished north of the border (the Irish box) at North 56 degrees and 30 minutes and north towards St. Kilda. In addition, a boat has fished just under 300 tonnes at the "edge".
North of Porcupine Bank, conditions were bad now at the end of the week and on Sunday the last boat left this area. Weather conditions are also bad and the information we get from the field on Sunday is that most boats are not fishing due to high winds. According to weather maps, there may be a "blistering" in the wind a little on Monday. Seven boats are left on the field while a similar number are starting to approach the field on the outward journey.
Blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou)
15-16 blue whiting trawlers have a quota remaining, while almost all pelagic - North Sea trawlers have a quota. But of the latter, many are fishing their blue whiting quota in connection with "edge fishing" in the North Sea.
Despite the COVID-19, so far this has not created problems for the implementation of fishing and both the fleet and the land industry have taken their precautions. All factories, with the exception of one that had not decided, should run normal operation during the Easter weekend.
In addition to blue whiting fishing, there is very little fishing going on at this time, only three catches of a total of just over 60 tonnes of horse mackerel and 260 tonnes of eel are recorded in our registration journal this week.
