Family-run aquaculture leader invests over $149,000 to meet rising global demand for premium seafood
Goatsbridge Trout Farm has announced a significant investment of approximately$149,000, aimed at boosting the production of premium trout products to meet growing demand both inIrelandand international markets.
The Kilkenny-based company is sharpening its focus on high-value trout offerings while improving processing efficiency as part of a broader long-term growth strategy. This latest move follows the completion of a major factory extension in Thomastown last year, reinforcing the company's expansion trajectory.

Gerard Kirwan, production manager
A substantial portion of the investment—around $69,000 —was secured through the Seafood Processing Capital Investment Scheme , funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union . The initiative is administered by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) , Ireland's seafood development agency.
Richard Donnelly , Interim CEO of BIM, highlighted the company's forward-thinking approach: "Goatsbridge Trout Farm has been blazing a trail in terms of innovation in recent years, and this investment will support its strategy to meet growing demand for higher-value trout products. It also highlights the positive impact of EMFAF funding in helping aquaculture businesses become more resilient and sustainable."
Founded in 1965 , the business is run by husband-and-wife team Mags Kirwan and Ger Kirwan , and has grown to become Ireland's largest freshwater trout producer as well as one of its longest-established aquaculture enterprises.
Over the past decade, the company has dramatically increased output—from approximately 230 tons annually to over 600 tons —following the acquisition of additional farming sites in County Wicklow . Today, Goatsbridge operates six sites and employs more than 34 staff , managing the entire production chain from fish farming to processing, packaging, and distribution.
Mags Kirwan emphasized the strategic importance of the investment: “ This investment allows us to fully utilize the raw material we produce and add greater value through our processing operations. By focusing on higher-margin products and improving operational efficiency, we are strengthening the long-term sustainability of the business while continuing to grow the Goatsbridge brand both in Ireland and internationally.”
In parallel with its processing upgrades, the company has embarked on a digital transformation program, including the rollout of a new Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system to streamline production management, financial reporting, and operational planning.
Kirwan added: “In addition to strengthening our processing capacity, we have expanded our management structure as part of our growth strategy. Our focus is on building the Goatsbridge brand, expanding export markets, and developing relationships with major retailers and wholesalers in Ireland, the UK and beyond.”
With global demand for sustainably sourced seafood continuing to rise, Goatsbridge believes this investment positions the company strongly for future growth. “Innovation and sustainability are at the core of everything we do,” said Kirwan. “This investment ensures that Goatsbridge will remain a leader in Irish aquaculture while continuing to bring high-quality and responsibly produced trout to consumers at home and abroad.”
