Family-run aquaculture leader invests over $149,000 to meet rising global demand for premium seafood

Goatsbridge Trout Farm has announced a significant investment of approximately$149,000, aimed at boosting the production of premium trout products to meet growing demand both inIrelandand international markets.

The Kilkenny-based company is sharpening its focus on high-value trout offerings while improving processing efficiency as part of a broader long-term growth strategy. This latest move follows the completion of a major factory extension in Thomastown last year, reinforcing the company's expansion trajectory.

Gerard Kirwan, production manager

A substantial portion of the investment—around $69,000 —was secured through the Seafood Processing Capital Investment Scheme , funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union . The initiative is administered by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) , Ireland's seafood development agency.

Richard Donnelly , Interim CEO of BIM, highlighted the company's forward-thinking approach: "Goatsbridge Trout Farm has been blazing a trail in terms of innovation in recent years, and this investment will support its strategy to meet growing demand for higher-value trout products. It also highlights the positive impact of EMFAF funding in helping aquaculture businesses become more resilient and sustainable."

Founded in 1965 , the business is run by husband-and-wife team Mags Kirwan and Ger Kirwan , and has grown to become Ireland's largest freshwater trout producer as well as one of its longest-established aquaculture enterprises.

Over the past decade, the company has dramatically increased output—from approximately 230 tons annually to over 600 tons —following the acquisition of additional farming sites in County Wicklow . Today, Goatsbridge operates six sites and employs more than 34 staff , managing the entire production chain from fish farming to processing, packaging, and distribution.

Mags Kirwan emphasized the strategic importance of the investment: This investment allows us to fully utilize the raw material we produce and add greater value through our processing operations. By focusing on higher-margin products and improving operational efficiency, we are strengthening the long-term sustainability of the business while continuing to grow the Goatsbridge brand both in Ireland and internationally.”

In parallel with its processing upgrades, the company has embarked on a digital transformation program, including the rollout of a new Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system to streamline production management, financial reporting, and operational planning.

Kirwan added: “In addition to strengthening our processing capacity, we have expanded our management structure as part of our growth strategy. Our focus is on building the Goatsbridge brand, expanding export markets, and developing relationships with major retailers and wholesalers in Ireland, the UK and beyond.”

With global demand for sustainably sourced seafood continuing to rise, Goatsbridge believes this investment positions the company strongly for future growth. “Innovation and sustainability are at the core of everything we do,” said Kirwan. “This investment ensures that Goatsbridge will remain a leader in Irish aquaculture while continuing to bring high-quality and responsibly produced trout to consumers at home and abroad.”

Looking ahead, the company is also advancing plans to introduce further automation in its processing operations, aiming to increase capacity while maintaining strict food safety and quality standards.

Goatsbridge has earned recognition for its sustainability efforts, becoming the first fully fledged seafood member of Ireland's national sustainability program, Origin Green , where it holds Gold Member status . It also maintains internationally recognized certifications, including GlobalG.AP and BRC Global Standards .

Its products are currently distributed through leading retailers in Ireland and international partners such as Sainsbury’s and Ocado , with additional exports reaching markets in France and the UAE .

Kilkenny - based company is focusing on high-value-added trout products and improving processing efficiency as key components of its long-term growth strategy. This investment follows a large-scale plant expansion completed last year in Thomastown , further solidifying the company's expansion efforts.

Of this investment, approximately US$69,000 came from the Seafood Processing Capital Investment Scheme , funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and jointly contributed by the Irish government and the European Union . The project is managed by Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) , the Irish Seafood Development Authority .

Richard Donnelly, interim CEO of BIM, said: “Goatsbridge Trout Farm has been at the forefront of innovation in recent years, and this investment will support its strategy to meet the growing demand for high-value-added trout products. It also highlights the positive role of EMFAF funding in helping aquaculture businesses enhance their resilience and sustainability.”

Founded in 1965 by husband-and-wife team Margus Cowan and Jair Cowan , the company has grown into one of Ireland’s largest freshwater trout producers and one of the country’s oldest aquaculture companies.

Over the past decade, the company has experienced significant expansion, increasing its annual production from approximately 230 tonnes to over 600 tonnes through the acquisition of farms in Wicklow County . Currently, Goatsbridge operates six farms and employs more than 34 people across the entire value chain, from breeding and processing to packaging and distribution .

Margus Cowan emphasized the strategic significance of this investment: “This investment allows us to fully utilize our own raw materials and create higher added value through processing operations. By focusing on high-margin products and improving operational efficiency, we are enhancing the long-term sustainability of our business while continuing to drive the Goatsbridge brand in Ireland and international markets.”

While enhancing its processing capabilities, the company also launched a digital transformation plan, including the introduction of a new Material Requirements Planning (MRP) system to integrate production management, financial reporting, and operational planning.

Kovan added: “In addition to strengthening our processing capabilities, we have also expanded our management structure as part of our growth strategy. Our focus is on building the Goatsbridge brand, expanding into export markets, and establishing partnerships with major retailers and wholesalers in Ireland, the UK, and elsewhere.”

With the continued growth in global demand for sustainable aquatic products, the company believes this investment will position it well for future growth. “Innovation and sustainability are at the heart of everything we do,” said Cowan. “This investment ensures that Goatsbridge will continue to be a leader in Ireland’s aquaculture industry, providing high-quality, responsibly produced trout products to consumers both domestically and internationally.”

Looking ahead, the company is also pushing forward with plans to further automate the processing process in order to increase production capacity while maintaining stringent food safety and quality standards.

Goatsbridge has also gained significant recognition for its sustainability efforts, becoming the first seafood company to officially join Ireland's national sustainability program, Origin Green , and achieving Gold Membership. Furthermore, the company holds international certifications including GlobalG.AP and BRC Global Standards .

Currently, the company's products are sold through major Irish retailers and international partners such as Sainsbury’s and Ocado , and are also exported to the French and UAE markets.
