Govt expects to triple fish production in 10 years

MOZAMBIQUE
Friday, May 19, 2017, 01:20 (GMT + 9)

The Mozambican government expects the country to capture more than one million tonnes of fish within ten years, compared to 300,000 tonnes obtained in 2016.

"Over the next ten years, we may be able to reach more than one million tonnes as a result of fishing for native and that from aquaculture species, provided that this process is carried out in an environmentally sustainable way," said the Minister of Marine Affairs, Inland Water and Fishing, Agustín Mondlane, according to the newspaper O País.

Under the 1st Expanded Consultative Council of the Ministry of Marine Affairs, Inland Waters and Fisheries, the minister pointed out that the majority of fish produced in the country is destined for the domestic market and only 10 per cent is exported to Europe, Asia and South Africa.

He also pointed out that shrimp and prawn are the main products sold abroad, and said that although tuna fishing has a lot of potential, it is not a really exploited resource.

The minister also lamented the decline experienced by the aquaculture industry in Mozambique, a sector that currently only produces about 1,200 tonnes per year.
