Canning association offers R&D to biotechnology companies

The canning association ANFACO-CECOPESCA offered the biotechnology sector of Galicia its R&D in blue biotechnology to advance in the creation of new functional compounds.
Thirty companies from the Business Technology Cluster of Life Sciences (BIOGA) participated Tuesday in Vigo at a meeting that discussed the opportunities for probiotics development in biotechnology and agro-food sectors.
"Our strategy in innovation is based on the industry 4.0 or smart industry and on blue biotechnology, and there we can collaborate with biotech companies from Galicia," said ANFACO-CECOPESCA general secretary Juan Manuel Vieites.
"We make it available to Galician biotechnology companies all our research and knowledge," said the head of the Spanish canning company because "the efforts must go in the line of valuing all the knowledge generated by research centres with an effective and agile transfer".
According to Vieites, the meeting "served to highlight the opportunities offered by biotechnology to the competitive development of the marine and food industry to advance in the creation of new food, functional compounds and healthy ingredients in line with the promotion of a healthy lifestyle".
In 2016, ANFACO-CECOPESCA worked on 50 R+D+I projects in which biotechnology-based actions are also being developed, with the generation of 45 direct contracts with industry worth EUR 2.4 million for the development of biotechnological solutions . The mobilized budget amounted to EUR 60 million.
In the field of biotechnology, ANFACO-CECOPESCA manages 14 patents.
