The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has declared the national interest of the organization and performance of the Sixth Annual Meeting of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO), to be held from January 30 to February 3, 2018 in Lima.
This is established by Supreme Resolution No. 005-2017-PRODUCE, published in the official newspaper El Peruano.
"As a member, Peru actively participates in the meetings convened by the SPRFMO at the political and scientific level. In this way, Hector Soldi Soldi, deputy minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, was elected deputy chair of the SPRFMO Commission for a period of two years during the latest meeting held this year in Australia," explained PRODUCE.
As a State that ensures the responsible use of hydrobiological resources, through its participation in the Organization, Peru seeks to promote the establishment of conservation and management measures that guarantee the sustainable use of trans-zone resources in accordance with national legislation and International law on the subject.
It is in the interest of the Peruvian State to maintain its commitment to implement the conservation and management measures adopted by the Commission in order to ensure that fishing vessels flying their flag carry out their work in accordance with its provisions.
From PRODUCE, it is highlighted that the fact of becoming the venue for this annual meeting demonstrates the readiness of the Peruvian State to ensure the management of fishing activities and the conservation and sustainability of hydrobiological resources in the high seas.
This year, the quota allocated for fishing for horse mackerel in international waters for the period 2017 was increased by 35 per cent, from 7,400 to 10,000 tonnes, an achievement that seeks to contribute to the development of the industry in the country.
