Fourteen tuna fishing, processing and capture companies were informed in Manta on the Integrated Aquaculture and Fisheries System (SIAP), an additional tool with which the fishing authorities intend to combat illegal IUU fishing in the country.
According to the Deputy Minister of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Pilar Proaño, the SIAP will allow the continuous management of information from fishing and aquaculture product declaration, to legality, quality and safety, transportation, processing and marketing to ensure traceability during the whole productive chain.
Through the system it will be possible to in real time know what happens to the fishery resources at the time of capture, which will help ensure the legality of the Ecuadorian product in domestic and foreign markets.
Likewise, the system will inter-operate with fishery and aquaculture actors in the registration of the phases of capture, cultivation, mobilization, processing, marketing and export of fishery and aquaculture products. In addition, information will be interconnected among institutions linked to the fishing sector and foreign trade through the Single Ecuadorian Window.
Proaño stressed that through the International Action Plan to discourage IUU fishing, the National Government also established mechanisms and control systems that verify the traceability of landings at ports, under the supervision of the 285 fisheries inspectors distributed in 25 provinces at national level.
"With these systems we guarantee the transparency of information and provide citizens with access to services in a safe way," Proaño said.
This workshop was attended by the Ecuadorian Chamber of Tuna Industrialists and Processors (CEIPA), the Tuna Association of Ecuador (ATUNEC), Marbelize SA, Conservas Isabel Ecuatoriana SA, Eurofish SA, Ideal, INEPACA, Pespesca SA, Manabita Commerce, Seafman CA, Empacadora Bilbosa, Asiservy, Tadel and Tecopesca.
