Galicia wants the EU to take precautionary measures to protect fishing interests against Brexit

Galicia defends the need to adopt precautionary measures on the part of the European Union with the objective of protecting the maritime-fishing interests before the Brexit. The Galician community insists on the need for these measures during the extension for the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU, which will end on October 31, 2019.
This is reflected in the legal opinion of the director of the University Institute of European Studies Salvador de Madariaga, José Manuel Sobrino, about the current situation of the process of withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU seen from a maritime-fishing perspective, and which is preliminary to the final report commissioned by the Xunta on this matter.
This document was presented on Tuesday by the author to the Minister of Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, at a meeting held in Santiago, in which both discussed over the possible scenarios that are opened by the uncertainty of Brexit, an issue analyzed in Sobrino's report. Given this lack of definition and the extensions of the process, the analysis defends giving priority to the legal security of the EU.
Another issue emphasized by Sobrino's text, and addressed at the meeting, is that of the European elections, which will bring about changes in the composition of the European Commission. In relation to this aspect, the document warns of possible changes in the EC negotiating team for Brexit and defends the need for the EU to maintain the current one. During the meeting, Quintana highlighted this issue to prevent major changes in the agreement and maintain the negotiating capacity so that the Brexit is as orderly as possible and that it comes out positive for the Galician fishing sector.
This legal analysis is prior to the final focus of the Brexit study and is conditioned by the lack of definition of the United Kingdom's divorce from the EU, since to start the work it is necessary to wait for clarification of the situation, as the different alternatives make it difficult to concrete orientation of it.
In this way, this work is added to the road map drawn by Galicia to minimize the impact of Brexit on the Galician fishing interests, a process in which the Xunta always defended an agreement that supposed the maintenance of the current status quo, with access of the European fleet to British waters and the EU market by the United Kingdom.
