Pioneering technology firm unveils ambitious Searcle program, showcasing significant reductions in energy intensity and carbon footprint, alongside innovations in biodegradable fishing materials and AI-driven sustainability.

Bizkaia – Zunibal, a global leader in developing cutting-edge technological solutions for the fisheries sector, has published its inaugural Sustainability Report, underscoring its deep-seated commitment to responsible fishing practices and a sustainable future for the industry. The comprehensive report details the company's key contributions, significant achievements, and overarching vision for environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) impact during the 2023-2024 period.

The report highlights impressive milestones, including a substantial 38.8% reduction in energy intensity and a remarkable over 91% of energy consumption derived from renewable sources, preventing the emission of over 19 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. In its logistics operations, Zunibal has achieved a significant 47.2% decrease in its carbon footprint associated with international product transportation. Furthermore, a notable 95% of Zunibal's products are certified under the UNE 14006 ecodesign standard, ensuring that sustainability principles are integrated from the initial design phase of its technological developments.

Ibone Rodríguez de Pablo, Director and shareholder of Zunibal, emphasized the significance of this milestone: "The publication of this first Sustainability Report marks a pivotal moment for us. It reflects the cross-functional work of everyone at Zunibal and our firm belief that technological innovation must always be coupled with a strong social and environmental commitment.”

A key highlight of the report is the launch of Searcle, Zunibal's new strategic program specifically designed to drive sustainability and the circular economy through technological innovation across all its areas of operation. Launched in 2024, Searcle encompasses marine ecosystem protection, fishing efficiency, coastal community development, the circular economy, and strategic alliances, demonstrating the effective integration of ESG principles into Zunibal's global strategy, spearheaded by its dedicated Sustainability Committee.

In the realm of innovation, Zunibal has developed Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) using compostable and biodegradable materials, a groundbreaking solution that aims to significantly reduce marine debris without compromising operational effectiveness. Moreover, Zunibal has strategically strengthened its position by acquiring a 20% stake in Cambrian Intelligence, a leading company in artificial intelligence applied to the fisheries sector. This investment will facilitate the integration of advanced AI systems to optimize operational efficiency and minimize impacts on marine ecosystems.

The company champions responsible technology, developing tools that optimize catches and significantly reduce bycatch, directly contributing to the conservation of vital marine resources.

Patricia Ordóñez, Director of Science and Sustainability, added: "Through our initiatives in energy efficiency, ecodesign, and responsible technology, we are advancing towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious fishing industry. We are committed to being an active part of the global fisheries sector's transformation."

The Sustainability Report also underscores Zunibal's active commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as marine protection, fishing efficiency, the circular economy, and the strengthening of strategic partnerships.

The report has been prepared in accordance with the GRI Standards, ensuring a clear, structured, and internationally comparable presentation based on globally recognized transparency benchmarks.
