Technological Breakthrough in Deep-Sea Aquaculture Sets Stage for Industrial Food Security Strategy

QINGDAO, SHANDONG PROVINCE — In a landmark achievement for maritime engineering and food security, the Conson No 1 2-2—a 150,000-metric-ton intelligent aquaculture vessel—successfully completed its inaugural harvest on Monday. The operation yielded approximately 3,000 Atlantic salmon, totaling 12 tons of premium fish, signaling a new era for China’s high-quality deep-sea fishery industry.

Developed in Qingdao, Shandong province, this massive ship is the world’s first large-scale commercial application of "ship-based aquaculture tank farming." Managed by the Qingdao Conson Development Group, the vessel functions as a mobile, self-contained ecosystem designed to stabilize the supply of luxury seafood in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Evolution of Mobile "Smart" Farming

The Conson No 1 2-2 represents a massive leap in naval design, featuring 15 standardized farming tanks. These specialized chambers provide a total aquaculture volume of nearly 100,000 cubic meters. To put the scale in perspective, each individual tank holds over 6,000 cubic meters of seawater, a volume comparable to two or three standard swimming pools.

Unlike traditional coastal farms, the vessel utilizes a "mobile farming" model. It navigates between northern and southern waters along the Chinese coastline to follow optimal water temperatures, ensuring year-round growth for Atlantic salmon, trout, and other premium species. This mobility also allows the ship to actively dodge natural disasters such as typhoons and toxic red tides that frequently devastate traditional near-shore aquaculture in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea.

A Strategic Prototype in a Giant Market

While the harvest is a technical triumph, it remains a "proof of concept" when compared to China’s massive appetite for salmon. The Conson No 1 series aims for an annual production of roughly 3,700 tons. While significant for a single project, this volume must be viewed within the context of China's total consumption, which is estimated to exceed 100,000 tons per year.

Currently, China relies on imports for the vast majority of its salmon consumption, with Norway and Chile serving as the primary suppliers. Although the 3,700 tons produced by this "factory ship" model will not immediately shift the market balance or significantly reduce reliance on global giants, it serves as a vital blueprint. By proving that Atlantic salmon can be raised domestically in mobile deep-sea tanks, China is laying the groundwork for a future fleet of protein factories aimed at securing long-term food autonomy.(Source: Chinadaily)
