Mowi Shatters Production Benchmarks in 2026 Opening Quarter Despite Global Supply Fluctuations

OSLO — Mowi, the world’s largest salmon producer, has kicked off 2026 by reporting its second-highest first-quarter operational profit in company history. The aquaculture giant leveraged record-breaking seasonal revenues of $1.67 billion (€1.54 billion) to navigate a volatile market characterized by a temporary surge in global supply.

The company posted an operational profit of $239.3 million (€221 million) for the quarter, a slight increase over the $231.7 million (€214 million) recorded during the same period last year. This financial performance was bolstered by an all-time seasonal high in harvest volumes, reaching 136,000 tonnes.

Aggressive Growth Strategy

Mowi has successfully transitioned from a 400,000-tonne producer to a 600,000-tonne powerhouse in just a few years. For the full year of 2026, the company expects to harvest a total of 605,000 tonnes—the equivalent of 3.5 billion salmon meals—representing an annualized growth rate of 8.3%.

“I am extremely impressed with my 11,700 colleagues around the world who continue to deliver record volumes, record earnings and not least extremely good operational and cost performance,” said Mowi CEO Ivan Vindheim.

Navigating Market Volatility

While salmon prices dipped in the first quarter due to an unusually high global supply growth of 14%, market analysts at Kontali predict a stabilization. Supply growth is expected to flatline at 0% for the remainder of 2026 and hover around 1% in 2027. Vindheim noted that regulatory and technological constraints likely limit future industry growth to 1–2% annually, suggesting a "tighter market balance" that favors Mowi’s scale.

The company's "cost leader" strategy appears to be paying off. Mowi Farming reduced costs by 7.3% compared to the previous year, resulting in a year-on-year savings of $49.8 million (€46 million).

Downstream and Feed Success

The Consumer Products division saw a 21% year-on-year volume increase, processing 70,000 tonnes. While the European market remains steady, Mowi identified a "trifurcation" of growth, with China and the USA leading demand.

“We expect this trifurcation of market growth to persist throughout 2026 and beyond, supported by current trends, consumption habits and market penetration,” Vindheim stated. “Accordingly, we will continue to grow our downstream footprint with an emphasis on where we see the highest growth potential.”

Additionally, the Mowi Feed division completed an expansion at its Bjugn factory. The company aims to sell 650,000 tonnes of feed in 2026, an 11% jump from last year.

Shareholder Returns

Following the strong quarterly results, the Board of Directors has announced a quarterly dividend of $0.21 (NOK 2.30) per share.
