Rising Population Stocks Fuel Unprecedented Growth in Far Eastern Fisheries

The fishing industry of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands is witnessing an extraordinary explosion in the Sakhalin-Hokkaido Pacific herring population, with researchers signaling that 2026 is on track to deliver the highest catch volumes of the 21st century. This surge follows a decade of rapid expansion where catch volumes in the East Sakhalin subzone skyrocketed more than tenfold between 2015 and 2025.

According to data provided by the Sakhalin branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), the fishery reached a seventy-year peak in 2025, with a total harvest of 29,050 tons. Based on current market valuations, this massive haul represents a significant economic contribution to the region, valued at approximately $24.5 million USD (calculated from the average market rate of 75 rubles per kilogram).

Geographic Expansion and Catch Statistics

The core of the harvest is concentrated in the East Sakhalin subzone, specifically during the spawning window from April to June. However, the abundance of the species has seen it appearing frequently as bycatch in other regions:

  • Aniva Bay and Terpeniya Bay: Primary zones for spawning and pre-spawning catches.

  • Southern Kuril Islands: Annual bycatch of 1,000 to 2,500 tons.

  • Tatar Strait (West Sakhalin subzone): Annual bycatch of 1,000 to 2,500 tons.

Biological monitoring by the Marine and Freshwater Fish Laboratory has revealed a healthy size distribution for the 2026 season. In Aniva Bay, fish have reached an average length of 31.6 cm, while those off the southeastern coast of Sakhalin average 28.1 cm. Overall, individual fish lengths this year range from 24 cm to 37 cm.

Scientific Outlook for 2026

Experts from SakhNIRO are currently focused on intensive monitoring of fish runs. The VNIRO press service reported to Fishnews that the momentum of the current season is already surpassing historical benchmarks.

"The herring catch rate in 2026 will exceed that of previous years. If fishing intensity continues, a new record for Sakhalin-Hokkaido herring catch is expected in the 21st century."

With the population stocks continuing to expand, specialists maintain that the biological status of the herring remains robust. If the current trajectory of the April-June season holds, the region is poised to redefine its industrial records for the modern era.
