Surging sales to China and the United States drive a recovery for the seafood sector despite looming market volatility

The Vietnamese seafood industry has kicked off the year with a significant boost, as exports of crabs, lobsters, and other crustaceans climbed to over US$93 million in the first quarter of 2026. This represents a 23% increase compared to the same period in 2025, signaling a robust recovery for the sector. Data released by the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) suggests that while the figures are promising, the industry must navigate unstable raw material supplies and tightening trade barriers in the US and EU.

China Dominates the Crab Market

Crabs have emerged as the primary engine of this growth, with total exports reaching nearly $77 million in Q1, a 22% year-on-year rise. According to Vietnam Customs figures, the sector saw a dramatic turnaround after a 9% dip in January; exports skyrocketed by 83% in February alone, bringing in $29 million in a single month.

The recovery is largely fueled by the massive appetite of the China and Hong Kong regions:

  • Combined exports to these markets hit US$52 million, a 32% increase.

  • China alone accounted for US$51 million, representing nearly 68% of the total crab export value.

  • The proximity and high demand for live, fresh, and frozen products make China a vital, yet risky, partner.

VASEP experts warn that this "excessive reliance" leaves Vietnamese exporters vulnerable to sudden shifts in Chinese quarantine policies or seasonal demand fluctuations.

American Demand Drives Crab and Lobster Values

While China leads in volume for certain species, the United States remains the powerhouse for high-value crab exports. In the first three months of 2026, total crab exports reached US$16.433 million, a 30.4% jump.

The US market was the undisputed leader in this category:

  • US imports of Vietnamese crab reached US$13.057 million.

  • This reflects a 37.5% growth rate compared to last year.

  • The US now accounts for nearly 80% of Vietnam's total export value for this specific product group.

"The industry is experiencing a positive recovery, but complacency is a concern. Stringent barriers from the US and EU mean Vietnam must stabilize raw material sources to maintain this momentum."VASEP Report Summary
