Cold Northern Winds and Low Sea Temperatures Stalls Fishing Activity

A chilly spring has slowed down fishing activity along the Norwegian coast, leading to low catches for both blue whiting and mackerel over the past week.

Blue Whiting: Only a Single Catch Recorded

Only one catch of blue whiting was reported last week. The vessel «Dyrnesvåg» caught 360 metric tons of blue whiting and 30 metric tons of silver smelt. This catch was taken along «Kanten» (the Edge) in the area west of Stavanger. Fishing in the area is reported to be uneven, with the best results found furthest south.

From the Faroe Islands zone, where there has been consistent activity since Easter, no catches were reported last week. No Norwegian vessels are currently planning to fish there in the near future, leaving only Faroe Islands boats active in the zone.

So far, Norwegian vessels have caught 38,000 metric tons in the Faroe Islands zone, while 12,000 metric tons have been reported from Faroe Islands vessels. Moving forward, a few boats are expected to continue fishing for blue whiting along «Kanten», likely combining it with whitefish fishing.

Mackerel: Unseasonably Quiet Coastline

It was a sluggish week for coastal mackerel, with only 26 metric tons reported. This is significantly lower than normal for mid-May. For comparison, 110 metric tons were caught during the exact same week last year.

A cold northern wind and lower sea temperatures are the most likely explanations for the slowdown. Fishermen report a lack of plankton blooms, which usually gather the fish.

The mackerel was caught across various municipalities in Rogaland and Vestland counties. The fish average between 400 and 500 grams in size and are being sold for fresh consumption both domestically and abroad. Fishermen are holding out hope for sun and warmer weather to jumpstart the season.

North Sea Herring: Low Fat Content Delays Start

With reports of extremely low fat content in the North Sea herring, fishermen are taking a wait-and-see approach before officially launching the season. Much like the mackerel fishery, this sector is heavily dependent on warmer weather and a break from the biting northern winds.
