The state of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil, will begin marine shrimp farming after receiving the first environmental license certificate given to it by the State Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture (SEAGRI) and the Institute of the Environment (IMA).
The centre that will be dedicated to shrimp farming, of the vannamei species, is installed in the community of Mariseiro, in the municipality of Penedo. The unit covers eight hectares, where there are 11 nurseries with capacity to produce 15 tonnes per harvest, Tribuna Hoje reported.
SEAGRI head Alvaro Vasconcelos noted that shrimp farming in Bajo San Francisco is part of the agricultural diversification in Alagoas, with support from SEAGRI, IMA, the Agriculture Federation, the Federal University of Alagoas and Banco do Brasil.
For his part, IMA president Gustavo Ressurreição Lopes said that the this certificate award, which is the first in Penedo, demonstrates the interest of the Government of Alagoas in legalizing all types of activity that is developed without attacking the environment.
"Granting this document is a source of pride to us, and we want to grant more environmental license certificates of that activity, very soon. With that in mind, we have already discussed the issue of simplifying the licensing process for the activity with Secretary Álvaro Vasconcelos. We believe that with the dis-bureaucratization we will fight illegality," added Lopes.
According to Germano Albuquerque, owner of the Eldorado farm and a pioneer in this activity in Alagoas, his project can serve as a model for other producers to invest in that activity in the Bajo San Francisco region.
"The environmental license granted by the Government of Alagoas is undoubtedly a support and an essential incentive for the start of our shrimp farming activity in Bajo San Francisco region," he said.
