Fresh cod exports grow but frozen cod sales fall

A total of 5,700 tonnes of fresh cod, including fillets, were exported with a total value of NOK 203 million (USD 25.2 million) in May, representing a 4 per cent growth in volume and a 12 per cent increase in value, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.

The entity also informed that during the period from January to May, 48,000 tonnes of fresh cod were exported with a total value of NOK 1.7 billion.

In May, frozen cod export volume reached 6,000 tonnes with a total value of NOK 216 million, representing a 17 per cent drop in volumen 8 per cent in value.

In the first five months of the year, the sales abroad of frozen cod amounted to 33,000 tonnes with a total value of NOK 1.2 billion.

Clipfish export volume grew by 10 per cent, to 7,600 tonnes, and the value of these sales abroad increased by 8 per cent in May, with Potugal, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica being the largest importers.

In the January-May period, 36,000 tonnes of cutlery were exported to a value of NOK 1.6 billion.

In the fifth month of the year, 4,700 tonnes of salted fish were exported with a value of NOK 237 million, representing 4 per cent growth in volume and a 13 per cent increase in value. Portugal remained the largest recipient of salted fish from Norway in May, up 6 per cent in volume compared with the previous year.

In the first five months of this year, 18,000 tonnes of salted fish were exported to a total value of NOK 895 million.

Another resource Norway exported was herring, whose sales abroad reached 10,300 tonnes in May with a value of NOK 109 million in May. This is a reduction in volume of 26 per cent and in value of 25 per cent. Poland, Germany and Ukraine were the key markets.

For the period from January to May, 113,000 tonnes of herring were exported with a value of NOK 1 billion.

In the case mackerel, sales abroad reached 11,000 tonnes in May with a total value of NOK 149 million, representing a 14 per cent growth in volume and 14 per cent in value. Ukraine, Japan and Vietnam were the largest export markets.

For the first fifth months of the year, export of the resource amounted to 72,000 tonnes with a total value of NOK 927 billion.

King crab exports increased 8 per cent in volume, to 73 tonnes worth a total of NOK 21 million in May, representing an 18 per cent growth in value.

This resource export volume reached 567 tons in the period from January to May with a total value of NOK 161 million.

For prawn, export volume increased by 3 per cent to a total of 891 tonnes, while export value grew by 16 per cent in May to NOK 72 million.

For the January-May period, 3,700 tonnes of prawn were exported with a total export value of NOK 304 million.
