The latest figures published by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) show that the first anchovy fishing season in the northern central zone has boosted the growth of the Peruvian economy in April.
In this regard, National Fisheries Society (SNP) head Elena Conterno indicated that these data show that previous levels of capture of the resource are being resumed, which results in a boost of the economy of the country’s fishing areas.
"The good performance of the activity this season has corroborated the good health of the anchovy biomass, ruling out any alert on predation of the species pointed out by some voices," she said.
According to the INEI, in April the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew 7.81 per cent, the best result of the last five years. In the case of the fishing sector, the advance was 81.15 per cent as a result of the greater capture of anchovy for indirect human consumption (185.53 per cent), before the start of the first fishing season of this year, in which 1.09 million tons of anchovy were caught compared to 382,660 tons landed in April 2017.
Meanwhile, manufacturing output closed the month of April with an advance of 20.33 per cent, which managed to close the first quarter of 2018 with positive growth figures. According to the Ministry of Production, this result is mainly due to the advance of the fishing products industry (162.2 per cent), as well as the recovery of several industries such as fruit and vegetable preserves and milling industry.
