Shrimp producers from the southern zone of Honduras on Monday complained in front of the Mexican Embassy in Tegucigalpa against the closure of the Mexican market to their exports, a measure that has been in force since October 20, 2017.
According to the Association of Small and Medium-sized Aquaculture Farmers of the South (APEMASUR), the closure of the Mexican market to fresh shrimp farmed in Honduras has caused losses of some HNL 400 million (USD 16.6 million).
The Mexican authorities justify the closure of their market to shrimp produced in the departments of Choluteca and Valle, in southern Honduras due to the alleged presence of the "yellow head" disease.
In this regard, director of the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA) of Honduras Ricardo Paz insists that there is no scientific evidence of this disease.
The small and medium-sized Honduran shrimp producers, which are the most affected, consider that Mexico is violating the Free Trade Agreement that it maintains with the countries of Central America.
The Secretariat of Commerce of Mexico informed that its head Ildefonso Guajardo Villarreal yesterday received his Honduran counterpart, Arnaldo Castillo, to review the commercial issues of the bilateral relationship, and discussed in particular the procedures that must be followed to facilitate the import of Honduran shrimp to the Mexican market.
