Young's Seafood has lost a GBP 30 million whitefish and shrimp sales contract with the supermarket chain Asda. But despite this ‘disappointing news’ the Grimsby-headquartered firm states that Asda remains as an important customer.
The firm also highlighted recent contract wins, which it said demonstrated its ability to retain and grow the business, BBC News reported.
“Our existing relationships with multiple retailers and our recent natural whitefish, salmon and coated fish contract wins demonstrate our ongoing expertise and leadership in own-label and our ability to retain and grow business,” a spokesperson of the firm stated.
For its part, from Asda sources said it would not comment on individual contracts, said Young's continued to be a significant partner.
According to trade news media, Asda has given Young's notice on about £30m of business in whitefish and shrimp.
It was also reported the prawn work would be heading to Lyons Seafoods, a UK division of France's Labeyrie Fine Foods, while the whitefish contract would go to Grimsby-based Albert Darnell.
Experts in the field consider that the UK seafood sector is going through a very difficult time with high-cost inflation after Brexit and the currency situation.
In April Young's Seafood, which employs about 1,700 people in Grimsby, was put up for sale.
The company has been in business for more than 200 years and based in the northern Lincolnshire port for more than 50 years.
Young's has also confirmed the closure of its Pinneys of Scotland plant in Annan, which came after consultation over proposals to move production from the Scottish site to Grimsby.
