Fish landings drop 13 percent in May

Icelandic vessels landed 122,166 tonnes of fish in May, which is a 13 percent decrease from the same month in 2018, reports Statistics Iceland.
Demersal catches amounted to 48,000 tonnes in May, 7 percent more y-o-y, but flatfish and shellfish catches decresed by 11 percent 29 percent, respectively.

Pelagic catches also dropped compared with last year, by 23 percent, according to data gathered by the Directorate of Fisheries.
In the 12 month period from June 2018 to May 2019 the total catch was nearly 1.1 million tonnes, down 14 percent compared with the same period a year earlier. This decrease was due to less pelagic catch.

The value index in May is 2.5 percent higher than in May 2018.
