Government authorizes exploratory mullet fishing in La Niña Lagoon

According to Ministerial Resolution No. 263-2019-PRODUCE, the measure will be in effect from 00:00 on the next business day after the resolution of the Regional Government of Piura showing the list of artisanal fishermen with a valid fishing permit that will participate in the survey.
La Niña Lagoon is a water surface that is formed exceptionally, in the years of occurrence of the El Niño phenomenon in the Sechura depression in northwestern Peru. The lowest point of the depression, located to the south east of the Illescas massif, is 34 m below sea level.
The objective of this activity, in which artisanal fishermen of the La Niña Lagoon will participate along with the IMARPE, is to know the current state of the resource and the current characteristics of this ecosystem, among other aspect, in order to collect information to give fishing ordinance recommendations.
According to the norm, the measure will end 60 calendar days after the start of the exploratory activity. It also specifies that the landings will be made only in the place called García, in La Niña Lagoon, and that the hydrobiological resources caught should be destined exclusively for direct human consumption.
The IMARPE will carry out the monitoring and follow-up of the exploratory fishing and will recommend in a timely manner to the PRODUCE its complete or partial suspension f the sustainability of the resource is being affected.
