TOMARI, Hokkaido – The Koshi District Kouto County Fishery Cooperative (represented by Chairman Riki Ikemori), known for its regional brand "Hokkaido Tomari Kabuto Salmon," saw the first harvest of its farmed trout salmon for the season on June 9. These salmon, raised in the Kabuto division of Sakazuki Port, reached market after a six-month cultivation period.

Approximately 12,000 salmon were introduced into four net pens (two cylindrical pens with a 20m diameter, one 15m cylindrical pen, and one 10m rectangular pen) last November. On the first day of harvest, 2,500 fish were landed from the 15m cylindrical pen and the 10m rectangular pen. These fish averaged about 2 kilograms in size and approximately 4 tons were traded to Sapporo Chuo Suisan at 1,300 yen per kilogram. A portion of the harvest will also be filleted by the Hokkaido Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations and used as a return gift for Tomari Village's "Furusato Nozei" (hometown tax donation) program.

The remaining salmon will be harvested in three additional batches throughout June, marking the completion of the fourth season (2024-25) for "Hokkaido Tomari Kabuto Salmon." The brand has garnered a strong reputation for its moderate fat content and refined, odor-free flesh.

"Hokkaido Tomari Kabuto Salmon" is raised in the rough waters of the Sea of Japan and is characterized by its high fat content and little odor
Looking ahead to the fifth season, the Fishery Cooperative's Salmon Aquaculture Department will continue to manage feeding and other aspects with the support of Tomari Village. Plans include adding another 20m diameter cylindrical net pen and constructing a waterway within the fishing port to improve tidal flow, with the aim of expanding the business scale.
